Q: Do I need a bicycle light when riding at night?

Posted On: February 11th, 2016

A: New York bicyclists are required to have two lights from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise. The front bicycle light must emit white light and be visible from five hundred feet. A rear red light must be visible for three hundred feet. One bicycle light must also be visible from the sides for two hundred feet.

Required Equipment for cyclists under New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law

VTL § 1236 (a) and (e) Bicycles must have a white headlight, a red taillight and reflectors between dusk and dawn.
(b) Bicycles must have a bell or other audible signal.
(c) Bicycles must have working brakes.
(d) Bicycles must have reflectors, reflective tires and/or other reflective devices.

According to the New York Safety Council, headlight laws vary slightly from state to state. Breaking these laws could result in you getting pulled over and issued a traffic ticket. If you’re planning to take a road trip to another state, make sure to check that state’s vehicle code to make sure you know about any rules of the road you might not be used to. When in doubt, keep your headlights on!
